Germany's captain in support of playing Egypt 2021 as scheduled

Germany's national handball team captain Uwe Gensheimer revealed his support and backing to play the 27th IHF Men's Handball World Championship on its previously planned and scheduled time in January 2021 in Egypt.

"We all know how many viewers we get in front of the TV with the national team, that we are the driving force behind our sport. And that is why it is not worth doing without the World Championship," Gensheimer was quoted as saying on Germany's Bild .

"If it is possible, the World Championship should be held as scheduled.”

The 33-year-old, Gensheimer who plays for Rhein-Neckar responded to demands from the heads of THW Kiel and SG Flensburg-Handewitt, who had spoken out in favor of a World Championship cancellation as they fear an increased risk of infection at the tournament from January 13th to 31st due to the current global coronavirus situation.

"The decision of starting the Bundesliga season in October is right. The desire for it grows daily," the former PSG star added.

Egypt will host the global handball showpiece tournament from 13 to 31 January 2021 while the tournament's Draw was held earlier on Saturday 5 September at the Giza Pyramids Plateau.
